by Emily Dickinson
A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period -
When March is scarcely here
A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.
It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.
Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay —
A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.

Does spring renew the muse in you? Do you have a favorite spring poem? Is spring your favorite season?
Looking outside my basement window today, I noticed the many tulips and daffodils I planted last November, were starting to break through the ground. Even though it will snow tomorrow, these harbingers of a new season cannot be denied. Spring, after all, is Nature's 'January 1st.'. Living for several months in the black and white photographs of Winter, Spring seems alien to the senses. In the past, Spring represented the promise of new beginnings. Now Spring stands witness to many shortcomings and the starkness of reality.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful poem!! I do like

What a lovely and timely poem, Claudia! And I just adore this picture, especially with the bumblebee reminding us that life awakens with the new season. For me, spring means renewal. The word "spring" makes me think of moving forward and that is what I strive to do in my life and with my writing. Thank you for this beautiful post--Happy Spring to you!
ReplyDeleteHi Vasilios,
ReplyDeleteI like your "Nature's January 1st" analogy ;)
Winter can be beautiful, however, I cannot handle long winters like the ones we have here. And it's at those down moments I see winter as black and white as you said. Although spring it's official as of today, it has not arrived to Montreal yet. :(
Hi Kitty,
I'm so happy to hear you like this poem by Dickinson. I absolutely love it! It says so much without overstating the obvious. ;)
Hi Kelly,
Thank you! Glad to hear you like the photo. We love taking pictures of nature. I was torn between this pic and one of a fox. I opted for the former because it depicts spring ;)
I hope Spring brings you all the inspiration you need for your writing.
Love the Emily Dickinson poem! My favorite season is actually winter. It inspires me to write. I love the thought of snuggling with a blanket and hot chocolate and my laptop. I'm not a huge fan of spring because that means it's allergy season for me!
ReplyDeleteHi Racquel,
ReplyDeleteWinter? Hmmm, you haven't lived in Montreal yet ;) I guess I enjoy spring and summer because I don't have any allergies. Besides, our winters are sooooo long we just want to be outside when summer arrives (our spring is still very cold) :(
Beautiful poem. I love spring.
ReplyDeleteThanks Claudia, for the poem. Noone writes quite like Emily Dicknson. It's as if she was endowed with a third eye or something! I and my husband were talking about the beautiful, luminous light of Spring just the other day. Is it an inspiration? Yah certainly, and most definitely in this cold country, only climactically speaking of course!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this beautiful poem, Claudia. Here in Turkey and Turkic Republics (Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan), we have spring festival on March 21. We call it `Nevruz`. The UN's General Assembly in 2010 recognized the International Day of Nevruz, describing it a spring festival of Turkish origin which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. If you want to see photos about Nevruz celebrations, visit my blogs.

Hi Carol,
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it. ;)
Hi Veena,
You're right. The light is different, I've noticed that despite the cold weather :(
Hi Isa,
Thank you for sharing that info about "Nevruz". Never heard of it before. I think a lot of cultures celebrate spring. It's the time for renewal and rebirths.
That is a beautiful poem, my fave season is Autumn.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna,
ReplyDeleteHappy to see you 'round again. Autumn is beautiful indeed. Too bad ours is too short. :(
